America's Dark Night of the Soul
We are experiencing again, a dark night of the soul.
The fight against racism is not new, but this time it feels different. More people are taking a stand. People are sharing their opinions even though they are afraid and unsure if their words will come out right.
What is a dark night of the soul?
These happen when we are upleveling, reaching a new state of consciousness and understanding. It’s a difficult experience where we begin to shed old beliefs and frameworks. We discover where we need to change. It can feel hopeless with no end in sight. But this is when you realize which parts of life are on autopilot. A light is shined on limited perceptions. A spiritual crisis. The opportunity to face our shared shadow.
What is shadow? What is the shadow self?
It is what we hide, our shame, our insecurities, our fear, our bigotry, and so much more. It is our embarrassments. Our dirty laundry. But to know the light, you must know darkness. To develop as a person and to continue on our spiritual path, we continually need to look at our shadows. They can never be solved “” but a continuous cycling of awareness, understanding, integration, and progress. As a country, it’s understanding the systematic racism that runs through the veins of the country. It’s in every aspect of our lives. It is pervasive. It is generational. It disproportionately affects our black communities.
If you’re looking for resources, see Measuring Racial Discrimination (Free download), the cycle of wealth inequality between Whites and Blacks, how African Americans continuously face obstacles in finding good jobs, and a study of race and economic mobility in America. These are some studies that can allow us to better understand what it means to be black in the United States.
