How Your Ancestral Trauma Affects You Today

A lot of the fears that we experience may not be our own. They are passed down to us by our parents or other family members. And they influence the choices we make in our everyday lives.

When you are the child of immigrants, ancestral trauma might be a large burden in your life. It can lead to constant survival mode and living in a scarcity mindset or one that doesn’t resonate with you.

Stepping away from the expected path may be extremely nerve-wracking and challenging. You are moving away from the familiar and the life others have planned for you. Staying in your new chosen reality filled with abundance and possibility can be challenging.

This is a reminder that you are the one to choose a life that is focused on growth and fulfillment rather than survival. It’s that easy you choose every day to focus on abundance rather than scarcity.

One fear that comes up a lot for me and my clients is the fear of being seen. It’s ok to share who you are and to pursue what lights you up. It’s safe to be yourself.

Being afraid of being seen can be traced back to trauma your parents and grandparents experienced in their lives but never fully addressed. I know for myself, my family had a difficult time during the Cultural Revolution in China. It was a time when being different was dangerous. You could not speak your mind or else you could lose your life. I don’t know if my family ever addressed this traumatic experience. And so I believe my fear of being fully seen and fully me comes from this specific experience that isn’t even mine.

How does it show up in my life? When I started this business, I hid behind it. Each day, I continue to peel back the layers and share more of myself and release the fear of being myself and sharing what’s on my mind. I shift away from, “what will be think?” or “will people resonate with this?” To: “It’s my truth and I want to share it. Someone else out there will want to hear it. We can’t just all be echoing the same things. I need to share my opinions.”

For one client, it causes her to not ask for what she deserves in terms of compensation.

Another waits and waits to share her gifts with the world. She procrastinates pursuing her dream.

And the list goes on.

Healing starts with awareness. Investigate your family history and the history of where they lived and spent most of their time. Being curious and exploring your ancestral trauma will allow you to slowly release it.

It’s time to reclaim your personal power. It is ok to look into your past to learn from it, but be sure not to let it dictate everything that occurs in the present.
